Project Description
How can we design and 3D print a modern sundial with an integrated mandala art?
As part of a submission to Prusa’s competition that asked designers to create a unique timepiece, I decided to develop a sundial product with an integrated mandala art at the center. The idea was to focus on the aesthetics of the product and make it a statement piece that could be placed on a flat surface anywhere with direct sunlight.
Using a software called Rhinoceros, I started the 3D model design with simple commands and focused on developing the proper angles so that the sundial would be as accurate as possible. The base of the product was comprised of simple commands including circle, line, offset, trim, and extrude. The mandala came from the layered laser cut art project I designed and shared before. The last part of the design was the gnomon which is the triangular dial that casts a shadow when it’s installed.
